Benjamin Millepied, né le 10 juin 1977[1] à Bordeaux, est un danseur et chorégraphe français de danse contemporaine.

Biographie

Benjamin Millepied est le fils d'une professeur de danse. Après avoir passé son enfance à Bordeaux et au Sénégal (sa mère est professeur de danse contemporaine), il intègre très jeune, à 13 ans, le Conservatoire national supérieur de Lyon où il a pour professeur Michel Rahn. En 1992, il rentre à School of American Ballet de New York, et obtient deux ans plus tard son premier rôle de danseur dans le prestigieux New York City Ballet, dans 2&3 Parts Invention de Jerome Robbins[2]. Il travaille pendant de nombreuses années avec Robbins et en 2001, il est nommé danseur étoile de cette institution. Il interprète avec cette troupe les grands ballets de George Balanchine, de Jerome Robbins, mais également des chorégraphies plus contemporaines, notamment d'Angelin Preljocaj[1].

Tout en continuant à danser les premiers rôles, Benjamin Millepied démarre en 2002 une carrière de chorégraphe. Il devient en 2004 directeur artistique du Morriss Center Dance à Bridgehampton (New York). En 2009, il propose sa première importante chorégraphie pour son institution de rattachement, le New York City Ballet, avec la création de Quasi una fantasia sur le quatuor à cordes homonyme d'Henryk Górecki[3],[4].

Il partage la vie de l'actrice Natalie Portman, qu'il a rencontrée sur le tournage du film Black Swan en 2009. Fiancés, ils sont les parents d'un petit garçon, Aleph, né le 15 juin 2011[5],[6].
