Le Grammy Legend Award, ou le Grammy Living Legend Award[1],[2], est un prix spécial de mérite accordée aux artistes par le Grammy Awards, d'une cérémonie qui a été créé en 1958 et s'appelait à l'origine Gramophone Awards[3]. Distinctions dans plusieurs catégories sont présentées lors de la cérémonie chaque année par le National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences des États-Unis pour des réalisations exceptionnelles dans le secteur de la musique[4],[5].

Le premier Grammy Legend Awards a été délivrés en 1990 à Andrew Lloyd Webber, Liza Minnelli, Robinson Smokey et Nelson Willie. L'honneur a été inauguré pour reconnaître "les contributions et l'influence apporté dans le domaine de l'enregistrement» [7]. L'année suivante, quatre musiciens dont (Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash et Quincy Jones) ont été accueillies avec Legend Grammy Awards. Le prix a été décerné à Barbra Streisand en 1992 et Michael Jackson en 1993.

Après 1994, lorsque les musiciens américains Curtis Mayfield et Frank Sinatra étaient tous deux nominés du Grammy Legend Awards, les honneurs ont été donnés pour les artistes de façon intermittente. Le tenor de l'opéra, l'italien Luciano Pavarotti a été le bénéficiaire de 1998 de la sentence. L'année suivante, l'anglais chanteur-compositeur Elton John a été reconnu à l'honneur. Les Bee Gees sont devenu les premiers récipiendaires de la bourse dans le XXIe siècle quand les frères ont été reconnues par les Grammys en 2003. Au total, quatorze musiciens solistes et un groupe a reçu le prix Grammy Legend.
