L’expédition De Rays fut la troisième expédition en Nouvelle-Guinée du Marquis de Rays, un gentilhomme français qui a tenté d'établir une colonie française en Océanie.
Histoire
L'expédition a tenté d'établir une colonie dans un endroit qui fut nommé par le marquis La Nouvelle-France et qui est l'île désormais dénommé la Nouvelle-Irlande dans l'archipel Bismarck en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée.
340 colons italiens à bord du navire à voile de l’Inde naviguèrent de Barcelone en 1880 pour rejoindre cette nouvelle terre, en cherchant à quitter les mauvaises conditions de vie en Italie à cette époque. 123 colons sont morts avant d'être secourus par les autorités australiennes.
Le marquis est largement soupçonné d'avoir délibérément induit en erreur les colons, distribuant de la documentation sur une colonie nommé "Port Breton" près de l'actuelle Kavieng qui avait de nombreux bâtiments publics, des routes et de riches terres arables.
