Forêt du Barœul
La forêt du Barœul était, au Moyen Âge une vaste forêt qui s'étendait entre Lille, Croix et Annapes.
Description
Importante réserve de chasse et de bois, elle appartint à la seigneurie du Breucq vers la fin du XIe siècle.
Elle était probablement une des reliques de la forêt préhistorique et de la forêt charbonnière.
Elle semble avoir précocement totalement disparu (dès le XIIIe siècle).
Son emplacement correspondrait aujourd'hui au territoire des communes de
- - Marcq-en-Barœul,
- - Mons-en-Barœul et
- - Villeneuve-d'Ascq.
Le quartier de Villeneuve-d'Ascq appelé « le Sart » rappelle le travail des défricheurs qui agrandirent la clairière au XIIe siècle, dans la forêt du Barœul.
