Bhagavan est un mot originaire du sanskrit, la langue mère de l'hindi, qui signifie Dieu, voire saint[1]. Il est issu de la meme racine que le titre du livre Bhagavad Gita qui veut dire la chanson divine. On peut comparer en teintant nettemement plus religieusement l'utilisation de ce mot en Inde, qu'en Afrique, avec celui de Sidi. Bhagavan est consacré naturellement plus à l'appelation de Shiva ou Vishnu; mais Bhagavan est aussi un terme flatteur ou respectueux. Il peut s'écrire Bhagwan ou Bhagawan. Il est utilisé comme le terme Sri dans Sri Aurobindo par exemple lorsque l'on parle de Jambeshwar Bhagavan.
