Angelo Heilprin (31 mars 1853, Sátoraljaújhely - 17 juillet 1907) est un naturaliste et géologue américain, d'origine hongroise célèbre particulièrement pour ses travaux sur l'éruption de la montagne Pelée en 1902.

Biographie

Ses études

En 1856, Angelo Heilprin rentre au Etats-Unis avec son père. Quelques années plus tard, il retourne en Europe pour y poursuivre ses études. De 1876 à 1878, il étudie à la Royal School of Mines à Londres, puis à l’Institut impérial de géologie à Vienne (Autriche), ainsi qu’à Florence et Genève.
De retour aux Etats-Unis, Angelo Heilprin devient professeur de paléontologie des invertébrés et de la géologie à l’Académie des sciences naturelles de Philadelphie (1800 – 1900). De 1883 à 1892, il devient le conservateur en charge du musée de cette même institution. Puis de 1885 à 1890, Angelo Heilprin est professeur de géologie à la Wagner Free Institute of Science de Philadelphie, ainsi que le premier président de la Société géographique de Philadelphie.
Angelo Heilprin a également montré ses talents artistiques. En 1880, il expose ‘’Autumn’s First Whisper’’ à la Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, et en 1883, ‘’Forest Exiles’’ au Musée des beaux-arts de Boston.

Ses voyages

En 1886, Angelo Heilprin entreprit une expédition pour explorer la côte occidentale de la Floride, peu connue alors. Il fit le même type de recherche aux Bermudes pour enquêter sur leurs structures géologiques.
Deux ans plus tard, Angelo Heilprin part au Mexique poursuivre son expédition scientifique et continuer ses recherches. Il escalade les plus hauts volcans du Mexique comme l’Ixtaccihuatl, le Pic d'Orizaba et le Popocatepetl pour vérifier leurs altitudes par des mesures barométriques. Ainsi, grâce à ses voyages, Angelo Heilprin contribua à une meilleure connaissance géologique de ces volcans.
En 1892, il conduit une expédition pour secourir le Peary au Groenland. Cette expédition de secours du Peary avait été organisée par l’Académie des Sciences Naturelles de Philadelphie dont il était le chef, secondé par le commandant Henry Grier Bryant.
En 1897, il remporta la médaille d’Edward Longstreth du Franklin Institute.
Après l’éruption de la Montagne Pelée du 08 mai 1902, qui détruisit entièrement la ville de Saint-Pierre (Martinique), Angelo Heilprin faisait partie de la mission américaine dépêchée en Martinique. Il a effectué un travail remarquable sur le terrain avec ses photos sur les phénomènes et les conséquences de l’éruption volcanique sur l’île. Il fut le premier géologue à faire l’ascension des bords du cratère de la Montagne Pelée le 31 Mai et le 1er Juin[1]. Un an plus tard, il réitéra l’ascension de la Pelée et donna quelques renseignements descriptifs sur l’amas de lave. En février 1906, il descend dans le cratère de la Montagne Pelée pour l’examiner de plus près.
En 1902, il a été membre fondateur du club américain d’alpinisme, puis en 1904, il est nommé à l’Université de Yale.
