This Was est le premier album de Jethro Tull, sorti en 1968.

C'est le seul album de Jethro Tull avec le guitariste Mick Abrahams, en désaccord avec Ian Anderson sur l'orientation musicale future du groupe. Abrahams part fonder Blodwyn Pig peu après la sortie de l'album ; il est brièvement remplacé par Tony Iommi (futur Black Sabbath), puis définitivement par Martin Barre.

This Was reste classé 17 semaines dans les charts britanniques, avec comme meilleur position la 10e place[4].

La version cassette en stéréo compatible est sortie en France sous le nom A Song for Jeffrey tiré d'une des chansons de l'album (Chrysalis Production Ltd 1968 - Island 73.012 CDE).
