The Strand (en français : la rive) est une rue de Londres (Royaume-Uni). C'était la route originale qui menait de la « City » au centre du pouvoir royal situé à Westminster qui, au Moyen Âge constituaient deux villes distinctes — bien que jusqu'au XVIIe siècle, la Tamise ait rivalisé avec cette rue comme itinéraire principal entre les deux. De nos jours, il commence à Charing Cross et se dirige vers l'est à la frontière de la City, marqué par le Temple Bar où il croise Fleet Street.

Le nom Strand vient du vieux mot anglais désignant un « rivage » (en allemand et en néerlandais, ce terme désigne une plage). Avant la construction de Embankment, The Strand était le long de la Tamise. The Strand et Aldwych ont été habités depuis les Saxons, quand le secteur était un village important, juste à l'extérieur des vieux murs romains de la ville. Tout au long du Moyen Âge, ce secteur est resté un lien de développement et d'activité à Londres, faisant le lien entre le centre économique à l'est et politique à l'ouest.

St Clement Danes a sans doute été construite au XIXe siècle, mais le bâtiment actuel est principalement un travail du XVIIe siècle de Sir Christopher Wren. St Mary-le-Strand a été conçue par James Gibbs et finie en 1717.

Il y a deux stations de métro : Charing Cross et Aldwych qui sont hors d'usage. La station de métro de Strand a été fusionnée dans la nouvelle station de métro de Charing Cross quand la Jubilee Line a été construite.

La rue désigné populairement sous le nom de « The Strand » bien que le nom de la rue soit juste « Strand ». Sur le Monopoly londonien, la rue est écrite en tant que "Strand", alors que sur la carte de propriété, c'est "The Strand".

Bâtiments

Bush House est occupée par la BBC, principalement par le service international, mais son personnel se déplacera bientôt vers un autre bâtiment.

Dans la culture

  • Roxy Music a publié en 1972 une chanson intitulée Do The Strand consacrée à ce lieu dans leur album For Your Pleasure.
  • Aragon l'évoque dans un recueil dadaïste de 1917 (Feu de joie) : « Le Strand me suit de brouillard jaune dans les salles » (Madame Tussaud).
