Un smartphone (téléphone « intelligent ») est un téléphone mobile couplé à un PDA. Il fournit les fonctionnalités d'agenda/calendrier, de navigation web, de consultation de courrier, de messagerie instantanée, de GPS, etc.

Un smartphone peut permettre d'installer des applications additionnelles sur l'appareil. Les applications peuvent être développées par le fabricant, par l'opérateur ou par n'importe quel autre éditeur de logiciel. La forte valeur ajoutée d'un smartphone est donc sa logithèque car un logiciel créé, par exemple, pour un Smartphone Windows Mobile ne sera compatible qu'avec les appareils fonctionnant sous ce système d'exploitation.

En 2005, seulement 2 % des téléphones mobiles sont des smartphones, mais les analystes prévoient d'arriver à 25 % d'ici à 2009[réf. nécessaire].

Fin 2007, l'iPhone est venu prendre la première place des ventes aux USA, bien que l'iPhone ne soit pas, à proprement parler, un smartphone, du fait de son orientation grand public et de son manque d'ouverture vers le monde de l'entreprise.

En 2008, Android, le nouveau Système d'exploitation open source développé par Google, a fait son apparition.

En 2009, Palm, Inc. lance le Palm pré équipé du Palm webOS

Normes de communication haut débit

Les smartphones ont besoin d'une connexion à haut débit vers l'opérateur téléphonique pour tirer parti de toutes les fonctionnalités (Push Mail, VoIp, etc.). À ce jour, plusieurs normes coexistent :

  • GPRS (ou 2.5 G) ;
  • EDGE (ou 2.75 G);
  • 3G ou UMTS;
  • HSDPA (ou 3.5 G);
  • HSUPA (ou 3.75 G, seuls le HTC TyTN II et le LG KS20 sont compatibles à ce jour - nov. 2007).

Le marché mondial des smartphones comptait, au deuxième trimestre 2008, les acteurs suivants[2] :

  • Nokia : 47,5 % du marché.
  • RIM-Blackberry : 17,4 %.
  • Apple : 12,9  %.
  • HTC : 4,1 %.
  • Sharp : 4,1 %.
  • Fujitsu : 3,3 %.
  • Autres : 23,7 %.

En 2009, à l'occasion du Salon Mondial de la Téléphonie Mobile, de nombreux constructeurs de PC se sont lancés dans la construction de smartphones : Asus, Acer, Toshiba, HP, Lenovo ou encore Dell[3].
