Biographie et résumé filmographique

David Lean a commencé dans le cinéma comme assistant-opérateur (avec le clap). En 1930, il travaille dans l'édition des films d'actualité diffusés au cinéma pour Gaumont Pictures ou encore Movietone. Sa carrière, à proprement parler, commence avec Escape Me Never de Paul Czinner (1936), tandis que son premier travail comme réalisateur est effectué en partenariat avec Noel Coward sur Ceux qui servent en mer (In Which We Serve, 1942). Il se fait un nom avec Brève rencontre (Brief Encounter, 1945) puis dirige plusieurs films basés sur des romans classiques tels que Les Grandes Espérances (Great Expectations, 1946). Le Mur du son (The Sound Barrier, 1952) est une comédie à l'anglaise, tandis que Chaussure à son pied (Hobson's Choice, 1954), dont Lean est aussi producteur, est une adaptation comique du Roi Lear dans le Manchester victorien.

Avec l'arrivée de la couleur, Lean devient une figure incontournable de l'industrie hollywoodienne qu'il intègre dès 1955 et pour laquelle il assure la réalisation de triomphes commerciaux à savoir des films à grand spectacle de facture conventionnelle sur fond historique comme Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï (The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) ou encore son chef-d'œuvre Lawrence d'Arabie qui lui valent chacun un oscar pour sa mise en scène. En 1965, il réalise Le Docteur Jivago (Doctor Zhivago) qui est également un succès. Après le succès mitigé de La Fille de Ryan (Ryan's Daughter, 1970), il ne dirige plus aucun film jusqu'à son dernier en 1984 : La Route des Indes (A Passage to India), adapté d'E. M. Forster. Il meurt en 1991 alors qu'il prépare l'adaptation de Nostromo de Joseph Conrad.
