Rav Ovadia Yossef

Rav Ovadia Yossef (רב עובדיה יוסף), né en 1920 à Bagdad en Irak, est un ancien Grand Rabbin d'Israël, décisionnaire rabbinique de grande renommée pour les séfarades et leader spirituel du parti politique israélien séfarade et religieux Shass.

Ovadia Yossef émigre en Palestine à l'âge de 4 ans, et étudie à la Yechiva Porat Yossef dans la vielle ville de Jérusalem. Le Grand Rabbin Sépharade, le Rav Meir Ouziel lui donnera son titre de Rabbin à l'âge de 20 ans.

Entre les années 1947 et 1950, il préside le Grand Tribunal rabbinique du Caire en Égypte. En 1968, le Rav Ovadia Yossef est nommé Grand Rabbin de Tel Aviv. Élu pour 10 ans, il obtient le titre de Rishon Letsion, Grand Rabbin Sépharade d'Israël en 1973.

C'est à ce poste qu'il aura en 1973 à se prononcer (positivement), en faveur de la judaïté des Falashas (juifs d'Éthiopie).

Dans les années 1980, il patronne la scission des Sépharades du parti Agoudat Israël (avec le rav Shach), scission qui donnera naissance au puissant parti religieux Sépharade israélien, le Shass. Ovadia Yossef en est toujours, (début 2006) le principal leader spirituel.

Chez ses partisans, le Rav Ovadia Yossef est réputé pour sa mémoire phénoménale et sa connaissance de toutes les sources de la halakha à travers les siècles. Pour beaucoup de Sépharades religieux, en Israël et dans le monde, le rav Yossef a donc des facultés extraordinaires, qui donnent un poids important à ses décisions rabbiniques. Dans celles-ci, le Rav cite parfois des centaines d'ouvrages de halakha pour appuyer sa position.

Le Rav Ovadia Yossef a écrit de nombreux ouvrages et en particulier deux Responsa : Yéh'avé Daat et Yabiya Omer.

Son fils, le Rav Yitshak Yossef est l'auteur de la série de livres Yalkout Yossef, qui traitent de tous les domaines de la halakha selon les directives et les décisions rabbiniques de son père.
