Le Nottingham Forest Football Club est un club de football anglais fondé en 1865 et basé à Nottingham. Il est le seul club européen à avoir remporté plus de Ligue des Champions que de Championnat. Nottingham Forest évolue pour la saison 2009-2010 en Championship (deuxième division anglaise).

Le 3 mai 2008, le club est remonté en Championship après avoir battu Yeovil Town FC 3 à 2.

À l'issue de la saison 2008-2009, Nottingham termine 19ème, assurant son maintien en Championship.

Avec l'objectif d'un retour en Premier League, un projet de nouveau stade a été mis en route afin de remplacer City Ground. Le nouveau stade d'une capacité de 50 000 places est prévu pour 2014.

Repères historiques

Fondé en 1865, le club adopte le statut professionnel en 1889 et rejoint la League en 1892 (Division 1).

Après sa montée en Premier League à l'issue de 1976-1977, Nottingham réalise une formidable saison, puisqu'il remporte le titre dès la première saison de son retour dans l'élite (le seul titre de l'histoire du club). Champion d'Angleterre en titre, Forest découvre la Coupe d'Europe des Clubs Champions en 1978-1979. Le club réalise un parcours parfait. Les Reds commencent par éliminer le champion en titre Liverpool FC qu'ils avaient également détrôné l'année précédente en championnat. Vainqueur ensuite de l'AEK Athens en 1/8, des Grasshoppers de Zurich en quarts et de Cologne en demis, Nottingham parvient à la finale de Munich. Victorieux 1/0 devant Malmö grâce à une tête plongeante de Trevor Francis, Nottingham est la troisième équipe à remporter la coupe pour sa première participation après le Real Madrid et l'Inter Milan.

Dans la foulée, Nottingham remporte la Supercoupe d'Europe face au FC Barcelone (1/1,1/0).

Tenant du titre, Nottingham dispute à nouveau la Coupe d'Europe des Clubs Champions en 1979-1980. Forest élimine d'abord Östers IF, puis le FC Arges-Dacia Pitesti en 1/8, le BFC Dynamo Berlin en 1/4 et l'Ajax Amsterdam en demis. En finale Hambourg SV faisait figure de favori. John Robertson donnait l'avantage aux Reds à la 19e minute alors que Peter Shilton arrêtait tout sur son passage. Les hommes de Brian Clough étaient sacrés champion d'Europe pour la deuxième fois, le titre était conservé.

Nottingham perd en Supercoupe d'Europe face au FC Valence (1/0,1/2) et en Coupe Intercontinentale devant les Uruguayens du Club Nacional (0/1).

Les lendemains de la génération double championne d'Europe sont plus délicats que les exploits de la fin des années 70. Nottingham Forest reste une bonne équipe de Premier League jusqu'en 1992-1993 où le club est relégué après une saison catastrophique. Auparavant Forest avait atteint la troisième place du championnat à trois reprises en 1983-1984, 1987-1988 et 1988-1989. Après une remontée express, les Reds retrouvent la Premier League dès 1994-1995 et accrochent une troisième place! Le retour est toutefois éphémère puisque Nottingham redescend en 1996-1997. La remontée est encore immédiate avec un titre de champion à la clef mais la descente est encore plus rapide à la fin de la saison 1998-1999 (dernière saison de Nottingham en Premier League). Forest évolue en Coca Cola Championship jusqu'en 2004-2005 avant de descendre en troisième division. Après trois années de purgatoire, Nottingham remonte en 2007-2008 (saison durant laquelle un autre ancien grand nom est croisé : Leeds United).

Actuellement, Nottingham Forest évolue en Coca Cola Championship (2ème division anglaise) et espère retrouver prochainement la première division nationale.

Palmarès

Il s'agit du seul club à avoir remporté plus de fois la Coupe d'Europe des clubs champions que son propre championnat national (il était qualifié pour la C1 1980 en tant que vainqueur de l'édition précédente). C'est également le seul club ayant été champion d'Europe à être descendu en 3ème division nationale.

Rivalités

Forest entretient diverses rivalités à différentes échelles. Au sein de Nottingham il existe un derby très local avec le proche voisin de Notts County (dont le stade Meadow Lane se trouve à moins de 275 m de City Ground de l'autre côté de la rivière Trent).

L'autre principal rival est le club voisin de Derby County (situé à 25 km).

Autrefois Liverpool fut également un rival important lorsque les deux formations évoluaient ensemble en Premier League.
