Synopsis

Allie Fox (Harrison Ford), inventeur génial autant que maniaque, décide de quitter les États-Unis dont il ne supporte plus le mode de vie consumériste. Il embarque pour le Honduras, accompagné de sa famille. Là-bas, en pleine jungle, il décide de construire cette société nouvelle dont il a toujours rêvé...

Commentaire

C'est Paul Schrader qui signe en partie le scénario de ce film, adaptation d'un ouvrage de Paul Theroux que le réalisateur Peter Weir voulait porter à l'écran depuis un certain temps. Schrader et Weir ont peu communiqué pendant le tournage, et le cinéaste a ajouté de nombreuses choses au script même s'il n'est pas crédité[1]. Jack Nicholson était d'abord pressenti pour le rôle d'Allie Fox[2], mais ce sera finalement Harrison Ford qui l'obtiendra, retrouvant ainsi Peter Weir juste après le succès de Witness. Démythifiant à la fois la figure du père et de l'aventurier, ce fut une sorte de contre-emploi pour l'acteur dans une œuvre aux tonalités pessimistes. Mosquito Coast se solda par un échec en salle et un mauvais accueil critique[3]. River Phoenix, qui interprète ici le fils d'Harrisson Ford, interprètera ce dernier jeune dans Indiana Jones et la Dernière Croisade.
