Lord William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, connu comme Lord William Bentinck (14 septembre 1774 - 17 juin 1839), deuxième fils de William Cavendish-Bentinck (3ème duc de Portland).
Il était dès l'âge de 20 ans, gouverneur de Madras. Il commanda en Sicile les troupes britanniques qui protégaient cette île contre les armes de Napoléon Ier, et y introduisit, malgré la reine Marie-Caroline d'Autriche, une constitution libérale (1810). En 1814, ayant reçu la mission de soulever l'Italie contre l'empereur, il adressa plusieurs proclamations aux Italiens, et entraîna Gênes par la promesse du rétablissement de la République ; mais lord Castlereagh le désavoua, et le congrès de Vienne livra les Gênois au roi de Sardaigne. Nommé en 1827, gouverneur général du Bengale, il montra dans ses hautes fonctions, qu'il remplit jusqu'en 1833, beaucoup de talent et de désintéressement. Il combattit l'usage qui obligeait les veuves à se brûler sur le corps de leur mari (le satî).
