Logan Pearsall Smith

Logan Pearsall Smith (18 octobre 18652 mars 1946) est un essayiste et critique littéraire américain qui a vécu au Royaume-Uni. Connu pour ses aphorismes et ses épigrammes, il doit aussi sa notoriété à son autobiographie, Unforgotten Years (1938).

Smith était né à Millville, dans le New Jersey, mais il s'installa à Londres.

Biographie

Fils de deux quakers célèbres, Robert Pearsall Smith et Hannah Whitall Smith, Logan fit d'abord ses études à Haverford College, un établissement quaker situé en Pennsylvanie, puis il s'inscrivit à Balliol College (Oxford). Sa sœur cadette Alys (1867-1951) fut la première femme de Bertrand Russell et sa sœur aînée Mary (1864-1945) épousa Bernard Berenson.

Smith fut grandement influencé par Walter Pater. Ses disciples furent entre autres Robert Gathorne-Hardy, Desmond MacCarthy, John Russell, R. C. Trevelyan et Hugh Trevor-Roper.

Proche du Bloomsbury Group, il publia plusieurs ouvrages à la Hogarth Press dans les années 1920. Sa personnalité servit de modèle au personnage de Sir Nicholas Greene (Nick Greene) dans Orlando, le roman de Virginia Woolf.
