John Neumann

John Neumann (28 mars 1811 - 5 janvier 1860) est le premier saint américain.

Il est né à Prachatice, en Bohême. Il étudia à l'école de Budweis avant d'entrer au séminaire en 1831. Deux ans après, il fut transféré à l'Université de Prague pour étudier la théologie. Il voulait devenir prêtre, mais les prêtres étaient déjà très nombreux en Bohême; l'évêque refusa donc de l'ordonner prêtre comme le firent les autres évêques d'Europe.

John écrivit aux évêques des États-Unis parce qu'il avait appris l'anglais dans une usine avec des ouvriers américains. Ils acceptèrent sa demande et il partit pour New York avec peu d'argent. Il devint évêque de Philadelphie en mars 1852. Il organisa le premier système d'écoles catholiques et augmenta le nombre d'étudiants dans le diocèse de 500 à 9 000. Il fut Provincial des Rédemptoristes.

Il s'effondra et mourut dans une rue de Philadelphie le 5 janvier 1860. Il fut canonisé par Paul VI en juin 1977.

Une statue monumentale en marbre et bronze, œuvre d'Ipoustéguy est installée dans l'église de Dun-sur-Meuse, elle avait été refusée par les Américains.
