Isherwood

Christopher William Bradshaw-Isherwood est un écrivain britannique naturalisé américain en 1946, né le 26 août 1904 à Disley (comté de Cheshire) et décédé le 4 janvier 1986 à Santa Monica (Californie).

Biographie

A l'école, il rencontre W. H. Auden avec lequel il restera ami tout au long de sa vie. Lors de ses études au Corpus Christi College de Cambridge, il fait la connaissance de Stephen Spender qui a été à l'université d'Oxford avec Auden. Rejetant l'élite conservatrice britannique qui ne comprendrait pas son attirance pour les hommes, il se réfugie à Berlin, capitale culturelle de l'entre-deux-guerres. Ces années seront décrites dans son ouvrage Adieu à Berlin ("Goodbye to Berlin"), compilation de différentes nouvelles dont Mr. Norris Changes Trains. Cet ouvrage sera adapté plus tard au théâtre puis au cinéma, dans la comédie musicale Cabaret interprétée notamment par Liza Minnelli en 1972.

En septembre 1931, le poète William Plomer lui fait rencontrer Edward Morgan Forster qui devient rapidement son mentor.

En 1938, Auden et Isherwood voyagent en Chine avant de s'établir aux États-Unis un an plus tard. Cet exil est diversement apprécié en des temps où la Grande-Bretagne s'apprête à déclarer la guerre à l'Allemagne. Isherwood s'établit néanmoins en Californie où il embrasse la religion hindouiste suite à sa rencontre avec Swami Prabhavananda. Le livre "My Guru and His Disciple" relate cette relation décisive dans l'inspiration de l'écrivain britannique.

A Hollywood en 1939, Isherwood continue ses rencontres spirituelles avec l'historien Gerald Heard, fondateur du monastère de Trabuco Canyon. Puis il adhère à la philosophie hindouiste Védanta partagée notamment par Aldous Huxley, Bertrand Russell, Chris Wood, John Yale et Jiddu Krishnamurti. Grâce à Huxley, Isherwood se lie d'amitié avec le compositeur russe Igor Stravinski.

De 1953 jusqu'à sa mort, Isherwood partage la vie du portraitiste américain Don Bachardy (1934-...) en Californie.
