International Telephone and Telegraph

International Telephone and Telegraph, abrégé en ITT, était un conglomérat d'origine américaine relativement peu connu malgré sa taille et son influence considérable.

Fondé en 1920, ITT s'était, par sa politique d'acquisitions, hissé au premier rang dans les techniques de pointe à l'époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Diversifiant ses activités à l'extrême sous la direction de Harold Geneen, achetant par exemple la chaîne d'hôtels Sheraton en 1968, la compagnie connaît ensuite des revers et finit par être démantelée en diverses composantes en 1995.

Elle s'était assurée le monopole des télécommunications dans différents pays. Par exemple, le groupe acquit 70 % de Chitelco (Chilean Telephone Company) en 1970. La compagnie a instigué un coup d'état avec l'aide de la CIA pour renverser le régime de Salvador Allende qui menaçait ses intérêts. Les faits sont officiellement reconnus sur des sites gouvernementaux et consignés dans deux documents officiels :

  1. La déclassification d'un rapport du Sénat américain (rapport Church Covert action in Chile 1963-1973 daté de 1975 fondé sur des documents de la CIA)[1]
  2. En 2000, le rapport Hinchey CIA activities in Chile[2]

ITT a été condamné en 2007, pour trafic d'armes, à une amende de 100 millions de dollars pour des exportations à destination de la Chine, de Singapour et du Royaume-Uni [3].
