Marquette (Michigan)
Marquette est une ville américaine située dans le Michigan, dans la péninsule supérieure de l’État, sur la rive du lac Supérieur. Selon l’estimation officielle de 2005, sa population s’élevait à 20 714 habitants. Densité : 285,2 hab./km² (739,1 hab./mi²). Elle est le siège du comté de Marquette. Sa superficie totale est de 50,2 km² (19,4 mi²). Coordonnées géographiques : 46°32′47″N 87°24′24″O / 46.54639, -87.40667.
Histoire
Son fondateur, Amos Harlow, l’a nommée Worcester, d’après la ville britannique d’où il était originaire. Par la suite, Worcester a pris le nom de l’explorateur français Jacques Marquette.
Économie
Marquette est un port important pour le transport du minerai de fer.
Bâtiments
On trouve à Marquette le plus grand dôme en bois au monde, le Superior Dome.
Éducation
La ville abrite la Northern Michigan University.
Transports
Marquette est desservie par l’aéroport international de Sawyer (Sawyer International Airport ou Marquette County Airport (code AITA : MQT, code OACI : KSAW, code FAA LID : SAW) situé à 17 miles (27 km) au sud du centre d'affaires de Marquette. Cet aéroport assure des vols vers Chicago, Détroit, Milwaukee et Minneapolis.
