Benzyle
Structure du groupe benzyle.
Le groupe benzyle (noté parfois benzile et abrégé en Bz) est le groupe fonctionnel de formule •CH2 -C6H5
Ce groupe est constitué d'un méthylène et d'un benzène et dérive du toluène par perte d'un atome d'hydrogène. De plus, ce groupement hydrophobe se retrouve dans de nombreux composés organiques.
Le groupe benzyle diffère également du groupe fonctionnel phényle car il possède en plus un méthylène CH2 supplémentaire.
La phénylalanine est un acide aminé qui possède comme chaine latérale un groupement benzyle.
Groupe protecteur
Le groupement benzyle est parfois utilisé comme groupe protecteur pour protéger des fonctions alcool ou phénol. On fait par exemple réagir un alcool avec du bromure de benzyle. La déprotection se fait alors par hydrogénation. L'intérêt de ce groupe protecteur est sa grande résistance à de nombreuses réactions.
