Né à Lugano, Giovanni Battista Discepoli fut appelé par certains, Lo Zoppo di Lugano à cause d'un handicap dû à une paralysie. Il a été l'élève du peintre Camillo Procaccini.
Parmi ses élèves on note Pompeo Ghitti de Brescia.
