Castle Clinton National Monument
Castle Clinton ou Fort Clinton est un fort circulaire fait de grès situé à Battery Park à l'extrémité sud de Manhattan, à New York. C'est un monument national américain. Le fort doit son nom à De Witt Clinton, le gouverneur de New York qui fit renforcer les défenses sur la baie.
Histoire
La construction du fort commenca en 1808 et fut achevée en 1811 sur une île connue sous le nom de West Battery (parfois South-west Battery), d'après les plans des architectes John McComb Jr. et Jonathan Williams.
West Battery avait pour but de compléter Fort Williams sur Governors Island National Monument, qui était situé à East Battery pour défendre la ville des forces britanniques lors des tensions qui marquèrent le conflit de la Guerre de 1812, mais qui ne participa jamais à aucune bataille. Par la suite des remblais firent étendre Battery Park, ce qui fit placer le fort sur l'île de Manhattan.
En 1823, le fort fut rebaptisé Castle Garden et reconverti en espace de loisirs et de concerts. Ainsi par exemple en 1853, le très populaire et excentrique chef d'orchestre et compositeur de musique légère Louis-Antoine Jullien (1812-1860) y donnera une série de grands concerts avec un immense succès. Castle Garden servit de centre d'immigration entre 1855 et 1890, avant l'ouverture d'Ellis Island, puis accueillit l'Aquarium de New York en 1896, avant de fermer ses portes en 1940.
Il est restauré dans les années 1970 en qualité de site historique.
