Frances Burney (1752 – 1840) ou Fanny Burney, devenue Madame d’Arblay par son mariage, est une femme de lettres et romancière anglaise.

Née à King’s Lynn le 13 juin 1752, son père, le Dr. Charles Burney (1726-1814), compositeur et spécialiste de l'histoire de la musique, est marié à Esther Sleepe (1725-62). Troisième d'une fratrie de six enfants, elle est autodidacte et commene ce qu'elle appelle ses gribouillis dès l'âge de dix ans. En 1793, à quarante-deux ans, elle épouse un émigré français, le général Alexandre D'Arblay. Leur fils unique, Alexander, naît en 1794. Après une longue carrière littéraire ponctuée de séjours en France pendant plus de dix ans, elle se retire à Bath où elle s'éteint le 6 janvier 1840.
