Dee Alexander Brown

Dee Brown (1908-2002) était un romancier et historien américain.

De son nom complet Dee Alexander Brown, il naquit le 29 février 1908 à Alberta (Louisiane). Il grandit dans le comté d'Ouachita puis à Little Rock (Arkansas), où il se lia d'amitié avec plusieurs Amérindiens qui lui firent prendre conscience de la manière biaisée dont les films américains dépeignaient leurs « frères de race ».

Brown travailla comme journaliste à Harrison (Arkansas) puis, après avoir servi dans les rangs américains durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il dirigea la bibliothèque agricole de l'Université de l'Illinois, y acquérant un diplôme en science des bibliothèques, puis devint professeur.

En 1973, il choisit de retourner en Arkansas à l'heure de sa retraite professionnelle, et y consacra désormais tout son temps à l'écriture.

Son œuvre la plus célèbre est Enterre mon cœur à Wounded Knee : la longue marche des Indiens vers la mort (Bury my heart at Wounded Knee, an Indian history of the American West), qui relate la relation conflictuelle entre les Amérindiens (Native Americans) et l'expansionisme américain. La publication de cette œuvre a conduit l'« Américain moyen » à porter un autre regard sur les cultures amérindiennes et, parallèlement, a amené les Amérindiens à voir d'un autre œil la Conquête de l'Ouest.

Auparavant, il avait écrit plusieurs romans, dont le premier fut Wave High the Banner, récit romancé de la vie de Davy Crockett, qui était une connaissance de son arrière-grand-père. Il écrivit une bonne douzaine de livres, y compris des ouvrages pour des enfants, avant la publication de Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Quelques années après ce succès de librairie, il fut de nouveau récompensé par un succès populaire accordé à son roman Creek Mary's Blood, qui racontait la vie de plusieurs générations d'une famille de pionniers de l'Ouest américain.

Dee Brown mourut le 12 décembre 2002.
