Le coloring field, ou colorfield painting, est un mouvement survenu de 1950 à 1960 environ, principalement aux États-Unis et au Canada, en réaction à l'action painting.
Ce style, dit d'expressionnisme abstrait, appartenant à l'école de New York, se reconnaît aisément par ses aplats de couleurs vives (souvent deux ou trois sur une toile) modulés par des effets de matière, de demi-tons, de contours nets ou fuyants... La profondeur est abolie car ces aplats n'admettent aucune perspective et se développent sur un seul plan. Toute figuration est exclue, l'œuvre fait abstraction de la forme pour mener à une phase méditative. La couleur étant ainsi libérée de ses fonctions localisantes et figuratives, elle devient autonome.
Les principaux artistes de ce mouvement sont Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman.
