Le terme de caïd peut avoir plusieurs significations :
- Il se dit, en Afrique du Nord, d'un notable qui cumulait autrefois des fonctions administratives, judiciaires, financières et parfois de chef de tribu. Généralement des hommes issus de familles riches, ils achetaient cette fonction et il était donc tout à fait courant d'être le caïd de plusieurs districts en même temps.
- Il désigne un homme qui s'impose avec dureté, et tout particulièrement le chef d'une bande de criminels (caïd de la mafia).
- Le terme caïd est couramment utilisé pour qualifier les chefs des bandes délinquantes dans les banlieues françaises, par les médias et la police comme par les délinquants eux-mêmes.
