Carmarthen, ou en gallois Caerfyrddin, est la capitale du comté gallois de Carmarthenshire, sur les rives de la rivière Tywi avec près de 20 000 habitants.

On peut y voir les ruines d'un château du XIIe siècle.

Le Livre noir de Carmarthen, du XIIIe siècle, est l'un des manuscrits les plus anciens en gallois.

Caerfyrddin a été construite sur le site d'un fort romain appelé Moridunum. On a par la suite rapproché le nom de celui de Myrddin, connu en français sous le nom de Merlin. D'après les prophéties du druide la ville durerait tant que vivrait le vieux chêne au centre de la ville mais elle serait noyée sous les eaux s'il était détruit. Le chêne est aujourd'hui à l'Amgueddfa Sir Gaerfyrddin (musée du comté) à Abergwili.

La ville est jumelée à celle de Lesneven en Bretagne.

Eisteddfod Genedlaethol

L’Eisteddfod Genedlaethol a eu lieu deux fois dans la ville :

  • Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru Caerfyrddin de 1911
  • Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru Caerfyrddin de 1974

Sport

La ville possède sa propre équipe de football, Carmarthen Town Football Club qui évolue en Championnat du pays de Galles de football.
