Richard Hurrell Froude (25 mars 1803 - 28 février 1836 (à 32 ans)) était un prêtre anglican et un chef de file au début du mouvement d'Oxford. Il était le fils de l'archidiacre RH Froude et le frère aîné de l'historien James Anthony Froude, et un ami de John Keble et John Henry Newman, avec qui il a collaboré à la « Apostolica Lyra », un recueil de poèmes religieux.

Biographie

Il est devenu en 1826 Fellow de l'Oriel College, à Oxford, et il rencontra celui qui devint son ami, John Henry Newman, avec qui il a voyagé en Méditerranée à l'hiver 1832-33. Il a été associé au Mouvement d'Oxford dès le début du mouvement. Une grande partie du reste de sa vie se passa hors de l'Angleterre.

Il meurt en 1836 à Dartington[1].

Après sa mort, Newman et d'autres amis ont édité le reste de ses écrits, dont une collection de lettres et des revues.

Postérité

Suite à sa mort John Henry Newman et John Keble publient ses écrits sous le titre « Remains ». Beaucoup découvrent alors la forte vie ascétique de Richard Hurrell Froude, ses nombreux jeûnes et privations, ainsi que ses examens de conscience sévères qui choquent lors de la publication[2].
