L'Old English Black est une ancienne race chevaline désormais disparue. Il trouve ses origines dans des chevaux qui ont traversé la Manche lors de la conquête normande en 1066, les vainqueurs ont pris quelques grands chevaux européens et les ont croisés avec des juments indigènes anglaises. Finalement, un type de cheval distinct a évolué pour être connu comme le Old English Black.
Malgré son nom, la race n'est pas un cheval de couleur. Pendant une longue période de temps, les robes baies étaient plus fréquentes que le noir. Il y avait aussi des rouans, gris et alezans. Les marques blanches ne sont pas différentes de celles des chevaux Clydesdale, le motif le plus recherché étant quatre pieds blanc et une belle face.
Finalement, le Old English Black s'est éteint comme race distincte et ses lignées ont été fusionnées dans d'autres races. Il a fortement influencé le Clydesdale et le Shire, et ces races ont de nombreuses caractéristiques héritées de leurs ancêtres.
