Bachi-bouzouk - Jean-Léon Gérôme (1869)

Un bachi-bouzouk ou bachibouzouk est un cavalier mercenaire de l'armée de l'Empire ottoman, avec un armement non standardisé et en pratique très léger, et une discipline faible. Ils participèrent notamment au siège de Vienne.

Ils se rendirent célèbres par l'ampleur de la répression qu'ils firent subir aux Bulgares, au cours l'Insurrection bulgare d'avril 1876, provoquant la guerre russo-turque de 1877-1878.

Étymologie

En turc, le terme signifie « tête cassée » (fêlée) ou « mauvaises têtes ».

Ces corps francs, composés de criminels et de mercenaires, sont parfois plus dangereux pour ceux qu'ils sont censés servir que pour leurs ennemis. Durant la guerre de Crimée, le sultan avait envoyé un corps de ces irréguliers aux généraux des troupes coalisées : il fallut prendre contre eux les plus grandes précautions, et la plupart moururent de choléra dans la Dobroudja.

Un bon général devait plutôt compter sur eux pour d'autres tâches : information, reconnaissance, poursuite, occupation du terrain, etc., ou des exactions communément associées aux soldats de circonstance.

Le sultan Osmanly remplaça ces bandes par des troupes encore plus redoutables, en armant les Kurdes à l'européenne et en leur faisant donner une solide instruction militaire.

Anecdotes

Dans « Les Aventures de Tintin et Milou », bachi-bouzouk est une des insultes du capitaine Haddock.
