Zayd ibn Thâbit[1], (VIIe siècle) fut le scribe personnel de Mahomet et un ansâr.
Il n'avait que onze ans quand Mahomet s'enfuit de la Mecque. Il prit part, dès que l'âge le lui permit, aux combats livrés pour la nouvelle religion, et se trouva à la bataille de Uhud ainsi qu'à toutes les suivantes.
Suite à la bataille d’Al-Yamâmah contre Musaylima, au cours de laquelle près de 1200 musulmans dont 39 grands Compagnons et 70 maîtres-récitateurs du Coran perdirent la vie, le calife Abou Bakr craignit que le Coran ne se perdit. Il confia alors à Zayd le soin de rassembler les fragments épars, et de compiler l'ensemble des versets en un seul livre : c'est cette copie authentique qui forme le Coran tel que nous le connaissons.
