La withérite est un minéral composé de carbonate naturel de baryum (BaCO3), cristallisant dans le système cristallin orthorhombique, groupe d'espace Pmcn.
Il a été nommé en l'honneur du médecin et botaniste britannique William Withering (1741-1799).
La withérite se forme dans les veines hydrothermales à basse température, associée à des minéraux lourds comme galène, anglésite et barytine. La withérite naturelle change très peu en composition, alors que pour le minéral synthétique une solution solide complète avec la strontianite a été trouvée. C'est le deuxième minéral de baryum, après la barytine, mais il ne s'agit pas d'un minéral commun.
