William H. Johnson

William H. Johnson

William Johnson était un peintre afro-américain, né à Florence, en Caroline du Sud, le 18 mars 1901 et mort en 1970. À l'âge de 17 ans, il part pour New York et étudie à la National Academy of Design ainsi qu'à Provincetown (Massachusetts). Il continua ses études à Paris pendant trois ans et se passionna pour le mouvement expressioniste, en particulier pour Chaïm Soutine. Il voyagea en Europe et en Tunisie et revint à New York en 1938. Il légua toute sa collection de tableaux au Smithsonian American Art Museum.
