The Man Who Sold the World est le troisième album de David Bowie. Il est sorti en novembre 1970 aux États-Unis et en avril 1971 au Royaume-Uni. Il a été en partie écrit et composé par le guitariste Mick Ronson et le bassiste et producteur Tony Visconti.

Historique

Bowie continue son exploration musicale avec un album plus ambitieux que les précédents. En effet, l’artiste livre ici des chansons complexes dans leur conception.

La musique très tortueuse s'appuie sur des textes qui le sont tout autant, redevables aux préoccupations et aux lectures du Bowie d'alors, dont la science-fiction (la nouvelle L'homme qui vendit la Lune de Robert Heinlein), tout comme l'occultisme et son admiration pour Aleister Crowley et l'ordre du Golden Dawn (The Width of a Circle et son apparition démoniaque), la schizophrénie (All the Madmen et sa litanie finale « zane zane zane ouvre le chien »), le surhomme nietzschien (The Supermen), etc. Autant de thèmes plutôt glissants qui reviendront aussi dans Hunky Dory (Oh! You Pretty Things et son Homo superior, Quicksand qui cite Himmler), et qui, menant tout droit au mysticisme nazi, lui joueront des tours quelques années plus tard.

Reprises

Le titre The Man Who Sold the World touchera un large public à travers la reprise de Nirvana en 1994, dans le fameux et médiatisé MTV Unplugged in New York. After All est repris par Tori Amos en face B du single "Strange Little Girls" en 2001.
