Cover of the 1862 sheet music for "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"

L'édition original de The Battle Hymn of the Republic publié en février 1862 dans The Atlantic Monthly.

Paroles

Version originale en Anglais

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

(Refrain)
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.
Refrain
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."
Refrain
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.
Refrain
In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me:
As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, (parfois "let us live to make men free")
While God is marching on.
Refrain
He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave;
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on.
Refrain

Mes yeux ont vu la gloire de la venue du Seigneur;
Il piétine le vignoble où sont gardés les raisins de la colère;
Il a libéré la foudre fatidique de sa terrible et rapide épée;
Sa vérité est en marche.
(Refrain)
Gloire! Gloire! Alléluia!
Gloire! Gloire! Alléluia!
Gloire! Gloire!
Je peux lire sa phrase vertueuse à la lueur des lampes faibles et évasées;
Son jour est en marche.
(Refrain)
(Refrain)
Il a puissamment sonné de la trompette qui n'appellera jamais à la retraite;
Il examine les cœurs des hommes devant son trône de justice;
Ah, sois rapide, mon âme, à Lui répondre soyez vifs, mes pieds!
Notre Dieu est en marche.
(Refrain)
Avec dans sa poitrine la gloire qui nous transfigure vous et moi;
Comme il est mort pour rendre les hommes saints, mourons pour rendre les hommes libres;
Tandis que Dieu est en marche.
(Refrain)
Il est la sagesse des puissants, Il est l'honneur des braves;
