Une sténotype est un clavier ressemblant à une machine à écrire servant à saisir du texte sous forme phonétique simplifiée à la vitesse de la parole. Le clavier est composé d'un nombre restreint de touches : 21 sur le modèle Grandjean.
Historique
La première sténotype a été conçue par le français Benoît Gonod, bibliothécaire à Clermont-Ferrand, en 1827. Il a construit un prototype et a présenté des rapports sur son système dans l'Académie de cette ville. En Italie, Celestino Galli en 1831, Luigi Lamonica en 1867, Isidoro Maggi en 1871 ont été les précurseurs. Ils ont conçu des machines et des méthodes de sténotypie mais n'ont pas eu d'application pratique.
La première dans son type à être utilisée a été celle créée par le professeur italien Antonio Michela-Zucco, inventée en 1863. Elle a été présentée officiellement en 1878 à l'exposition internationale de Paris et a provoqué un grand intérêt. Dès décembre 1880, sa sténotype a été utilisée au parlement italien.
Dans les décennies après 1880, de nombreux appareils d'écriture au brevet ont été annoncés qui ont également imprimé sur des bandes de papier.

- 11 avril 1876 : l’Américain John Zachos dépose un brevet sur du sténotype à New York ;
- 1909 : le Français Marc Grandjean développe une sténotype en France et crée en 1923 la société « Sténotype Grandjean » pour la commercialiser.
