Raimonds Pauls est né à Rīga (Lettonie), le 12 janvier 1936. Il est sans doute le compositeur letton contemporain le plus connu. Outre ses performances au piano il est aussi l'auteur de nombreuses compositions pour d'autres groupes et de chanteurs lettons.
En 2004, Raimonds Pauls avait composé pour six films musicaux et comédies musicales, trois ballets et plus de 50 films et représentations théatrales.
En plus de sa carrière musicale particulièrement prolifique, il est intéressant de noter une carrière politique qui débuta sous le régime soviétique. Il entre au gouvernement de la République socialiste soviétique de Lettonie en 1988 au poste de ministre de la culture. Il occupe ce poste jusqu'en 1993, année où il devient conseiller du président de la nouvelle république de Lettonie.
