La postproduction est la finalisation définitive d'un évènement audiovisuel enregistré, tourné ou capté.
Au cinéma et en vidéo
C'est la troisième étape de production d'un film, après la préproduction et le tournage. Elle concourt à l'élaboration du master du film, lequel est conformé aux éléments de postproduction avant d'être diffusé et éventuellement dupliqué ou copié en série.
La postproduction englobe l'ensemble des techniques de finalisation d'un produit filmique ou audiovisuel après son tournage :
2002 marque l'industrialisation des chaines de postproduction numérique et ainsi une révolution des techniques cinématographiques. Cette évolution a entrainé une restructuration du marché et des métiers, accompagné de son lot de problématiques. A tel point qu'aujourd'hui on voit des sociétés comme Workflowers se spécialiser dans l'optimisation des chaines de travail et prendre une place désormais indispensable dans la postproduction.
En musique
La postproduction musicale englobe les techniques employées en studio d'enregistrement après la prise de son.
- mixage : mélange des pistes enregistrées.
- mastering : mise en forme et dernière étape avant la gravure et le pressage et la mise sur le marché.
