Nothing Else Matters est l'une des chansons les plus connues du groupe de thrash/heavy metal Metallica. Figurant sur l'album éponyme (Metallica, sorti en 1991), plus souvent nommé Black Album en rapport avec sa pochette entièrement noire, cette ballade dénote par rapport aux compositions habituelles du groupe : elle débute par une longue introduction jouée à la guitare acoustique et ses paroles parlent sur un ton mélancolique d'indépendance et de ce qui est le plus important dans la vie. Cette chanson a participé au succès commercial du groupe en lui ouvrant les portes d'une diffusion plus grand public : elle fut ainsi classée à la 65e place du Top 100 en 1993 et a depuis été reprise par de nombreux groupes hors de l'univers heavy metal. Nothing Else Matters est parfois considérée par certains détracteurs comme le symbole du virage qu'aurait pris le groupe Metallica par rapport à la musique des albums précédents, plus rude, plus trash et moins commerciale.

James Hetfield (guitariste et chanteur de Metallica) a écrit cette chanson lorsqu'il était en tournée et loin de sa petite amie (so close, no matter how far...). James Hetfield a fait appel au chef d'orchestre de San Fransisco, Michael Kamen, pour l'aider dans la recherche d'une mélodie. Une version orchestre/guitare acoustique a ensuite été enregistrée par Metallica et est apparue en b-side sur le single de Sad But True au Royaume-Uni.

C'est ce même Michael Kamen qui conduira l'orchestre philharmonique lors de l'enregistrement du double album S&M sur lequel on peut entendre une version de Nothing Else Matters.

Nothing Else Matters est l'une des rares ballades de Metallica avec Fade to Black (album Ride the Lightning) et The Unforgiven (Black Album). C'est également l'une des seules chansons du groupe que Kirk Hammett n'a pas enregistré : James Hetfield y joue le solo et Bob Rock, producteur de l'album, la rythmique.
