Sir Martin John Gilbert, CBE, D.Litt. (né le 25 octobre 1936[1]) est un historien anglais et l'auteur de plus de 80 ouvrages sur la Shoah et l'histoire des juifs. Il est aussi reconnu comme l'un des pionniers des atlas historiques et comme le biographe officiel de Winston Churchill.

Éducation et famille

Martin Gilbert est né à Londres de Peter et Miriam Gilbert[2]. Neuf mois après le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il part vers le Canada dans la cadre du programme de protection des civils britanniques. La traversée en bateau de Liverpool à Québec éveillera l'intérêt du garçon pour cette période de l'histoire [1]. Après la guerre, il rentre à la Highgate School et sert deux année dans le National service. Plus tard, il entre au Magdalen College (Oxford) d'où il ressort en 1960 avec un Baccalauréat en arts d'histoire moderne[2]. Un de ses professeur fut A. J. P. Taylor. Puis il effectue ses études supérieures au St Antony's College (Oxford).

En 1963, il se marie avec Helen Constance Robinson, ils auront une fille. De sa seconde femme, Susan Sacher il aura deux fils. Depuis 2005, il est marié à l'historienne Esther Gilbert, née Goldberg[2].

Carrière

Biographie de Churchill

Après deux années à l'université, il est contacté par Randolph Churchill pour l'aider à écrire la biographie de son père. La même année, il ressort diplômé du Merton College (Oxford). Il consacre les années suivantes à concilier ses propres recherches avec celle de Randolph Churchill à Suffolk. Quand Randolph meurt en 1968, Gilbert est chargé de continuer son ouvrage et il achève donc les six volumes de la biographie. Il y consacre vingt ans. Chaque volume de la biographie de Churchill est accompagné de deux ou trois livres de documents complémentaires, ce qui donne un total de 24 volumes (25 000 pages). Sept autres livres sont prévus.

Autres ouvrages

Dans les années 1960, Martin Gilbert participe à la rédaction des premiers atlas historiques. Ses principaux travaux portent sur la rédaction d'un ouvrage sur l'holocauste et des volumes sur l'histoire de la Première Guerre mondiale et la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il écrit aussi trois livres intitulé: A History of the Twentieth century

Gilbert se décrit lui-même comme un "historien archiviste" qui fait principalement appel à des sources primaires dans son travail. Interviewé par la BBC sur ses travaux sur l'holocauste, il répond que "seul le rassemblement inlassable des faits peut répondre aux négationnistes de l'histoire"[3].

Il est fait commandeur de l'Ordre de l'Empire britannique (CBE), puis chevalier le 7 juillet 1995[4], pour "services rendus à l'histoire britannique et aux relations internationales". Il se retire du Merton College mais en reste membre honoraire.

En 1999 il devient docteur de l'Université d'Oxford "pour la totalité de ses travaux publiés". Depuis 2002, il est membre du Hillsdale College (Michigan) et entre 2006 et 2007 il est professeur d'histoire à l'Université de Western Ontario. En 2008 il devient membre du Churchill College.

Il participe aussi à l'enquête sur la guerre d'Irak en tant que membre du gouvernement britannique (dirigée par John Chilcot). Sa nomination à cette enquête a été critiquée au Parlement par William Hague, à cause de ses propos : il avait comparé George W. Bush et Tony Blair, à Roosevelt et Churchill.
