Angostura (parfois orthographié Angustura) est un assaisonnement de couleur brune de 44 °. Il s'agit d'un concentré d'essences utilisé pour les cocktails. Il est fabriqué à Trinidad et préparé à partir d'une formule secrète qui allie épices, extraits de plantes, herbes naturelles, d'écorces d'orange, substances amères et aromatiques.
On doit son invention au Docteur Johann Siegert, médecin militaire prussien engagé dans l'armée de libération de Simon Bolivar et fondateur de l'État de la Bolivie. Le Dr. Siegert soignait des soldats atteints de fièvre et de troubles intestinaux sévères.
Après quatre années de recherche et d'analyse des vertus des plantes tropicales, il développa en 1824 ses « bitters » pour stimuler l'appétit et la digestion des soldats souffrants.
Après les guerres, la réputation des bitters Angostura s'étendit vers les États-Unis et l'Angleterre. Ainsi démarra la notoriété mondiale des Bitters Angostura. Il sert comme ingrédient dans certains cocktails.
