Amitav Ghosh (né en 1956) est un écrivain et critique littéraire indien d'expression anglaise.

Biographie

Ghosh est né à Calcutta, au Bengale. Il étudia à la Doon School (où il fut codisciple de son aîné Vikram Seth), au collège St. Stephen's de Delhi, à l'Université de Delhi et à l'Université d'Oxford, où il obtint un Ph.D. en anthropologie sociale. Apparemment, Ghosh eut l'occasion de montrer certains de ses poèmes à Seth, qui lui suggéra de se cantonner à la prose.

Ghosh vit à New York avec son épouse Deborah Baker, biographe et éditrice chez Little, Brown and Company. Ils ont deux enfants, Lila and Nayan. En 1999, Ghosh a été nommé professeur de littérature comparée au Queens College (Université de la Ville de New York). Il a aussi été professeur invité du département d'anglais de l'université Harvard à partir de 2005. Il est récemment devenu propriétaire à Goa et retourne régulièrement en Inde. Il travaille sur une trilogie qui devrait être publiée chez Penguin Books India.

Sa dernière œuvre de fiction, The Hungry Tide (Le Pays des marées), a été publiée en avril 2004. The Shadow Lines, publié en 1990, lui valut le Prix Sahitya Akademi, la récompense littéraire indienne la plus prestigieuse. The Calcutta Chromosome (Le Chromosome de Calcutta, 1995) reçut le prix Arthur C. Clarke 1997. Les romans de Gosh sont caractérisés par des thèmes forts qui sont souvent liés au postcolonialisme, mais ils sont difficiles à catégoriser. Ses sujets sont personnels et uniques ; une partie de son charme tient à sa capacité à entrelacer une certaine "nostalgie indienne" avec des thèmes plus sérieux.

Ces romans sont traduits dans de nombreuses langues. The Circle of Reason (Les Feux du Bengale) a reçu le Prix Médicis étranger en 1990.

Ghosh a aussi écrit 4 ouvrages non-fictionnels : In an Antique Land (1992), Dancing in Cambodia, at Large in Burma (1998), Countdown (Compte à rebours 1999, sur la politique nucléaire de l'Inde), et The Imam and the Indian (2002, un ensemble d'essais sur différents thèmes tels que le fondamentalisme, l'histoire du roman, la culture égyptienne et la littérature). Il a reçu la Padma Shri du gouvernement indien en 2007. Dans son dernier roman très remarqué, A Sea of Poppies, l'écrivain indien a écrit l'odyssée des coolies ou engagés, partis vers l'île Maurice et les colonies, à la suite de l'abolition de l'esclavage.
