Kanien'kehá:ka signifie selon le contexte et les interprétations: "Peuple de la lumière", "Hommes éclairs", "peuple des silex" ou encore "Enfants des étoiles", dans la langue Iroquoise des indiens Agniers du sud-est du Canada.
Appelé aussi Mohawk par leurs ennemis "Abénaki" prononcé "mo-hawk" signifiant "mangeur d'hommes".
Certains éléments lexicaux proches du basque et de certains dialectes scandinaves laissent imaginer de probables échanges inter-culturels antérieurs à la colonisation française puis anglo-saxonne.
