John Dobson est un vulgarisateur américain en astronomie né en Chine, à Shanghai le 14 septembre 1915.

Formation

Il obtint un diplôme de Chimie à la faculté de Berkeley en 1943.

Le monde de l'astronomie amateur

À la fin des années 1960, il proposa une formule simplifiée de construction de télescope amateur : monture azimutale fabriquée à l'aide de matériaux de récupération, utilisation de miroirs minces de grandes dimensions pour l'époque. John Dobson est l'un des co-fondateur d'un groupe amateur en astronomie nommé sidewalk Astronomers de San Francisco.
