Jézabel

Dans le Tanakh et l'Ancien Testament, Jézabel est une reine d'Israël, dont l'histoire est racontée dans le livre des Rois.

Jézabel était une princesse phénicienne, fille du roi de Tyr Ithobaal Ier , qui a épousé le roi Achab. Racine la mentionne comme la mère d'Athalie.

La Bible lui reproche de détourner Achab du vrai Dieu et d'adorer son dieu Baal. Elle est accusée de tuer les prophètes du Seigneur, et Élie la maudit. Après la mort d'Achab, elle a continué à régner avec ses fils. Quand ceux-ci ont été tués, Jézabel a été également tuée, et son corps a été mangé par des chiens, réalisant ainsi la prophétie d'Élie.

Il y a aussi une Jézabel dans l'Apocalypse, dans le passage des "lettres aux églises qui sont en Asie". C'est une pseudo-prophétesse liée au nicolaïtes.

Il existe un sceau d'une Jezabel à cette époque, cité par l'égyptologue Kenneth Anderson Kitchen dans son livre On the Reliability of the Old Testament, qui pourrait être celui du personnage de la Bible.
