Jamaica est un quartier du Queens à New York aux États-Unis. Il fut d'abord un village de la Nouvelle-Néerlande, fondée par des Britanniques, sous administration néerlandaise, en 1656 sous le nom de Rustdorp. Le quartier de Jamaica n'a aucun lien avec la Jamaïque (bien que des immigrants jamaïcains y résident) ; la similarité de nom est une coïncidence. Les Britanniques, qui s'en rendirent maîtres en 1664, nommèrent cette région Jameco, du nom des indiens Jameco (ou Yamecah) qui vivaient sur la rive nord de Jamaica Bay, et dont le nom signifie « castor » en langues algonquines[1].
