Elle a joué dans le film "Fame", où elle a interprété le personnage de Coco et le titre dans la bande originale. Sur la bande originale du film Flashdance, elle a interprété Flashdance (What A Feeling). Cette chanson lui a valu le Grammy de la meilleure chanteuse pop en 1984.Son dernier album "Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel" est sorti le 4 avril 2011.
