L'Interborough Rapid Transit Company était l'exploitant du premier métro de la ville de New York lors de son ouverture en 1904, ainsi que des lignes de chemin de fer de la ville quelques années auparavant. Les métros de l'IRT correspondent à présent à la Division A du réseau métropolitain de la ville de New York. Les noms des lignes de l'ancienne IRT sont des chiffres allant de 1 à 7 , à l'exception de la S 42nd Street Shuttle. Les trois grandes lignes de la Division A sont la Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line (lignes 1 à 3), la Lexington Avenue Line (lignes 4 à 6) et la Flushing Local (ligne 7).
La première ligne appartenant à l'IRT a été inaugurée le 27 octobre 1904. Elle a été créée après plus de vingt années de discussion au sujet de l'efficacité et de la rentabilité d'un réseau métropolitain, alors que la ville possédait un très bon réseau de chemin de fer. L'IRT fut rachetée par la ville de New York en 1940, et les anciennes lignes de l'IRT font à présent partie de l'IRT Division de la New York City Transit Authority, cette division étant plus communément appelée Division A.
