Humphrey est une anglicisation de l'ancien nom de baptème Onfroi / Onfroy / Onfray porté par des seigneurs normands au moment de la conquête de l'Angleterre.

Il s'agit d'un prénom d'origine germanique Unfrid, composé des élements Un- (issu de unnan « donner ») et frid- « paix »[2].

Il est possible que la forme anglaise avec le [h] initial soit liée à l'influence de la racine germanique hun (cf. vieux norrois húnn « ours ») que l'on rencontre dans le prénom Humbert[3].
