Synopsis

Deux jeunes femmes fort émancipées, Margaret et Helen Schlegel, vont se lier d'amitié avec une famille traditionnelle, les Wilcox. La modernité des deux sœurs va créer des tensions et des drames chez les Wilcox, mais leurs destins sont maintenant liés.

Analyse

Ce film est la 3e adaptation d’un roman de E. M. Forster par James Ivory. C'est une remarquable étude de mœurs de l’Angleterre victorienne. La présence d’Anthony Hopkins et d'Emma Thompson, dont la performance a été couronnée par l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice en 1993, en font tout l'intérêt. Le film a obtenu le Grand Prix du 45e festival de Cannes.
